Corporate Responsibility Reports

At Chiquita, our achievement of high standards of corporate responsibility is a source of great pride, and it has become an essential part of our culture and business strategy. We have issued public reports on our corporate responsibility efforts since 2000. In addition, since 2003, we have issued interim updates on our corporate responsibility progress as part of our annual reports to shareholders.

2006 Annual Report: Corporate Responsibility Section (PDF)
In our latest report to shareholders, we announced that we have maintained 100 percent certification on our owned banana farms in Latin America to each of the following independent standards: Rainforest Alliance (environmental), Social Accountability 8000 (labor and human rights) and EurepGAP (food safety). In addition, we highlighted progress at the Nogal Reserve in Costa Rica and reported on the agreement reached with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding payments made to protect employee safety by the company's banana-producing subsidiary in Colombia.

In our latest report to shareholders, we announced that 100 percent of our owned banana farms in Latin America were now certified to each of the following independent standards: Rainforest Alliance (environmental), Social Accountability 8000 (labor and human rights) and EurepGAP (food safety). In fact, as part of a major consumer education campaign, the Rainforest Alliance seal is now included on all Chiquita bananas sold in nine European countries. In addition, we expanded the scope of the Nogal Reserve in Costa Rica and reported a decade of data demonstrating how certification has helped drive better farm productivity and lower costs.

In this corporate responsibility update, we reported achieving certification to the Social Accountability labor and human rights standard on 100 percent of our owned farms in Latin America -- fully one year ahead of our internal goal. In addition, we noted how we have extended our corporate responsibility efforts to our Processed Fruit Ingredients business, as we continued to expand the scope of our reporting to additional lines of business. We also noted a key challenge the company faced in Colombia.

For the first time, we included a section of our annual report to shareholders dedicated to corporate responsibility progress, including an update on certification to the environmental, social and food safety standards of the Rainforest Alliance, Social Accountability 8000 and EurepGAP on our banana farms in Latin America.

2002 Corporate Responsibility Report: Sustaining Progress (HTML)
In addition to outlining progress against our corporate responsibility goals, this report extended transparency along our supply chain, including for the first time our Chiquita Global Logistics operation, which transports bananas and other cargo between Latin America and our primary markets in Europe and North America.
