Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Responsibility at Chiquita is an integral part of our global business strategy. It commits us to operate in a socially responsible way everywhere we do business, fairly balancing the needs and concerns of our various stakeholders - all those who impact, are impacted by, or have a legitimate interest in the Company's actions and performance. We believe that fairly balancing the expectations of our stakeholders is essential to building a stronger and more financially successful Company.

Toward that end, Chiquita has chosen to apply a slightly modified version of the requirements of Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000), a standard developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), to certain areas of its operations. We believe that SA8000, together with its guidance material and accreditation process, is currently the most credible and verifiable social accountability standard. A comprehensive assessment of our environmental, social and financial performance, focusing on our banana sourcing operations in Latin America, is available in our corporate responsibility reports. These reports signal a spirit of openness in our communication with stakeholders about issues of social and environmental concern.

Chiquita is also a member of the UK-based Ethical Trading Initiative. The ETI is a unique alliance of companies, nongovernmental organizations and labor unions working together to advance good practice in business ethics, corporate responsibility and human rights.
