Chiquita is proud of its involvement in wildlife and forestry protection. We continue to invest thought, financial aid and exertion into biodiversity protection in the Nogal wildlife reserve in Costa Rica. In 2017, Chiquita made impressive progress at the Nogal reserve in the Sarapiqui area of Costa Rica.

The resort was established in 2004 as a result of a joint effort between Chiquita Brands and a portion of its clients to advance the preservation and protection of biodiversity. It is upheld by the Rainforest Alliance and the German Society for International Cooperation, GIZ.

What have we achieved so far?

In 2017 alone, three new species were enlisted during natural life tracking: a tapir, the biggest land mammal in Costa Rica, a bell bird and a yellow spotted lizard. These spottings demonstrate that the Nogal reserve has connections with other forested reserves, allowing animals to move from one to another in search for food sources.

To support reforestation, Chiquita has donated nearly 900 trees, which were planted at the Nogal reserve.

The Chiquita Blue Flag Ecological Program received an award for its protection of natural resources, with the best outcome in its category

Chiquita and local farmers planted trees on an unused baseball field in Nogal to protect the area from flooding from the Sucio river.

In 2017 different retailer partners and the pineapple cultivator Upala Agrícola sent supervisors to the Nogal Resort to see with their own eyes how, in the course of 13 years, Chiquita has contributed to improve the quality of life of the people who live in the area.

What are our next steps?

Chiquita is going to present an application for the Nogal reserve to be recognized as a private wildlife refuge in 2018. This will enable the reserve to get more protection against unlawful logging.

Chiquita's long term goal is to continue to protect the environment. Go on, support Chiquita in our goal of sustainability and environmental protection.
