At Chiquita, our experts have spent many decades lovingly growing the best bananas for you. As the pioneer exporters, we helped bananas become the great household treat they are today, and the famous blue sticker is our guarantee of fun, family-friendly quality and sustainability. We’re really proud that consumer research shows our bananas have the best taste, and last longer than others. Today, everyone knows how great our bananas are – and we’re still helping to make them even more enjoyable with our recipes and well-being advice.
As well as spreading the banana joy, we would like to introduce you to eight great reasons to enjoy our bananas.
In terms of health benefits, bananas win hands down over many pre-prepared snacks. They provide a “good” natural sugar – fructose – and a generous helping of fibre that helps to ensure this is slowly digested and absorbed, preventing sugar spikes (the “sugar rush” that leaves you craving more sugary food). Because of the way bananas help people digest sugar, a natural hint of sweetness is just the start of the good news. Their modest amount of good, metabolism-boosting carbs, about 30g per medium banana, means they are even recommended in several diabetic diets to satisfy sweet cravings and help to protect the heart (when eaten in moderation).
Our bananas are hailed as a superfood for lots of reasons: the high level of fibre and heart-healthy fats mean you feel fuller for longer, which is great news if you’re on a diet (and why Chiquita bananas are part of many detox and weight loss plans). The fibre is also a special kind – soluble fibre – that drives down bad cholesterol and reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Chiquita bananas are an athlete’s best friend Our bananas are heart protective: famously rich in potassium, a mineral important to building lean muscle, and low in sodium, they can help you sleep soundly and protect you against heart attack and stroke. With these benefits, it’s no wonder endurance athletes and runners love Chiquita bananas – indeed, we partner with many runners and marathons around the world including the famous New York, Disney and Athens races.
Our useful fruit is also crammed with antioxidants and essential minerals such as riboflavin (vitamin B2), which helps to prevent anaemia, cataracts and cracked lips, and keeps your skin looking good. B2 is really important in maintaining the body’s energy supply and also helps us to absorb and activate other beneficial vitamins and minerals.
Chiquita bananas are also a great source of resistant starch, particularly when still a little green. This starch is called “resistant” because it resists digestion, meaning our bodies digest it extra slowly. This means our bodies extract far fewer calories from a banana than from an equivalent amount of a cookie or candy. Also, if you’re on a special diet (paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, Whole30 (which cuts out added sugar), grain-free, sugar-free, or plant-based) a Chiquita banana is the ideal substitute for refined sugar, eggs or flour. In fact, they are the ultimate fast food as they come in their own handy packaging, which is not only tough – so they travel easily – but also compostable!
If you want to dress up a snack so kids think it’s something extra special, a Chiquita banana is the answer. For a “grab and go” breakfast, healthy peanut butter and banana are a match made in snack heaven (and on wholemeal bread, a fantastic sandwich). A Chiquita banana and almond butter is also a great Whole30 treat. There are some great recipes to help make bananas part of your everyday nutrition: children will adore General Mayhem’s healthy Chiquita banana sweet sandwich, and the Healthy Chiquita banana carrot cake is bound to be a hit all round as a teatime treat. Bananas are great in your beauty regime Don’t ignore those bananas when they’re riper than you might like to eat – Chiquita bananas make a great face mask when they’re mashed up. The antioxidant vitamins E and C and the fruit’s natural moisture help to revitalise and hydrate tired skin.
Overripe bananas also make great smoothies chopped up with a splash of milk, a teaspoon of honey and a few drops of vanilla or (for chocoholics) a teaspoon or two of cocoa powder. Just blitz and enjoy – adjust the amount of milk for the thickness of smoothie you like. As well as the fantastic health benefits, Chiquita bananas are amazingly tasty, the best of the bunch! With all these advantages and deliciousness on top, no wonder so many people love them.
